Software for ice thickness determination SKI-Led
SKI-Led software for ice thickness determination is used inside PicoR-Ice 2M device and allows to automatically determine layers of air, snow, ice and water and their thickness.
It is used mostly on tablet PC running Windows OS.
This software uses unique algorithms to process geophysical information, acquired during ice surface scanning, using video pulse lasting a few hundred picoseconds. The method used is reverse migration radargram processing. The main target of this algorithm is to analyze the structure of multilayer environment and define its parameters such as amount of layers and their depth.
SKI-Led software has a user-friendly interface. The product operator can see the ice structure in real time on a radargram. On a vertical axis distance in meters is displayed, horizontal axis is time. The radargram displays borders between air-snow, snow-ice, ice-water, water- soil. Usually the radargram displays layers with the most defined borders between air and ice or ice and water, due to measuring distances between them defines ice thickness. Thickness measurements and device height above the surface are displayed in separate windows.
The software has some options. The “Amplify” button is used in case of blurred profile view. The “Light” button is used to highlight ice thickness on a radargram with green color. The “Profile” button attaches the top radargram border to top ice border. The “Zoom” button allows to enlarge maximum ice thickness measured, but it lowers measurement accuracy (this mode can be used when ice thickness is more than 100 cm). The ‘Bookmark” button is used to mark records which take place at the radargram with red lines and can be used to mark control points.
A key software function allows to record all the signals for further analysis and detailed processing. The “player” mode allows to replay all bookmarked points, it can be used both on a tablet PC or on a desktop, using the PC version of software SKI-Led PC, which has more functions and abilities.
Due to a variety of ice types, depending on its formation type (and also several types if ice, snow, water layers) it is difficult to create an all-purpose software that would automatically identify ice thickness. That is the reason why our software is always being improved using the results send to us by our customers.
